Bike Tune-up Clinic

Spring is here and it's time to pull your bike out of storage and give it a tune-up. Don't know how? Well here is your chance to learn! Then come in to the Equipment Room anytime to tune-up your bike using our tools!

Sea Kayaking Trip

Grab a paddle and head out for a weekend on the water. Pack everything into a kayak to go for a paddle, camp on a beach, and head back the next day. Never been kayaking before? No worries…the pre-trip includes a pool session on basic safety skills needed for the weekend and instruction will be provided on the trip. Bring a suit and towel to the pre-trip meeting!

Backpacking Trip

Only in Alaska will you find a state park which is comparable to many national parks in the lower 48. We will head out into the Mountains for two days of exploration and great spring backpacking. Strap on your boots for some hiking in the high country and another truly Alaskan adventure. No experience necessary.

Kayak Rolling Clinic

If you are into kayaking, this clinic is for you. Learn how to roll your kayak back up without getting out! A must for whitewater kayakers and great for sea kayakers as well. This is a 4-part clinic in a saline-based pool (your sinuses will thank you).

Come practice your kayak skills in a warm, saline-based pool and meet up with other boaters to go paddle with. Use our boats or your own. Both Sea and Whitewater kayaks available (albeit a bit old), including paddle and skirt. Personal boats are allowed ONLY IF CLEAN!

Spring Stroll

Spring is here with more and more daylight, everyone is getting antsy to get out and play. But in true Alaskan style it's really more "Break-up" than it is "Spring," which makes it difficult to be active outside. So…we're going for a walk! We'll start at the Lagoon and walk up the Costal Trail along the water, ending downtown at the Snow City café for a warm drink before heading back to campus.

Basic Sea Kayaking

This 2-part Clinic is for anyone who has ever wanted to get into Sea Kayaking or those who have had a taste and want to learn the basics. We will go over equipment, basic strokes, and self-rescue skills in a warm, saline-based pool.

Spring Break

Spend 6 days and 5 nights in Valdez, Alaska. Stay at a Bed and Breakfast, go Ice Climbing, and Nordic or Backcountry Skiing.

Ice Climbing

Been Ice Climbing before and can't wait to go out again? Well this trip is for you! Head out to the ice and spend a full day tooling up top-roped climbs and getting tips from our instructors.

APU Trail Tour

How many times have you gotten lost or tuned around on the APU Trails? Well here is your chance for a guided tour of the Jim Mahaffey Trail System that winds through the nearly 300 acre, wooded campus and connects to the Anchorage Trail System.

Fairbanks Ski and Soak

Get out of town for the 3-day weekend and take a trip up to Fairbanks. Soak in the outdoor natural hot springs at the Chena Resort. Cross-Country ski to a cabin heated by a wood stove. Stay up late to see the Aurora Borealis. This trip will be a truly Alaskan experience that you won't want to miss!! Never been skiing before? No worries…instruction will be provided.

Intro to Ice Climbing

See how much fun you can have with two sharp tools on a frozen waterfall. You'll learn safe techniques for climbing ice. No experience necessary, some equipment provided.

Cross-Country Ski Trip

Don't limit your Nordic skiing experience to the city trails. Take to the mountains for a day trip of classic skiing. Get outside and enjoy the crisp air and beautiful landscape.

Intro to Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding

Always wanted to try but couldn't afford it? Ever tried it but learned from a less than skilled instructor? Well here is your chance. Head up to the Alyeska Ski Resort with Outdoor Programs and learn how to downhill ski or Snowboard. Subsidized by Outdoor Programs, Recreation Programs, and Student Activities.

Ice Fishing

Ever wondered what Alaskans do with only six hours of daylight and 10 below zero temperatures? We go Ice Fishing! Jason Frost will take you out to a local lake to try your hand at fetching fish out from under the ice. Don't miss this chance for a truly Alaskan experience. Dress warmly and we'll provide the hot cocoa!

Skate Skiing Technique Clinic

Need a few pointers on your skate skiing technique, or lack thereof? Come on out and learn how to skate ski with the best of them in a low-key non-intimidating atmosphere.. Improve your timing, your balance and your speed. A low student to instructor ratio will ensure that you get individualized attention and pointers.

Intro to Rock Climbing - 2-part Clinic

Learn how to Rock Climb in an indoor, fun, non-intimidating atmosphere. On Tuesday we will meet at the APU Rock Wall and learn the basics: gear, climbing technique, and belaying. Then on Thursday we will head to the Alaska Rock Gym to climb higher and practice your new found skills!

Winter Camping

Want to get outside but don't know anything about winter camping? Come car camping with us! Get out of town for a better view of the Northern Lights and some fresh air. Stay warm with our winter expedition gear and learn basic winter camping skills while getting out and having fun in the snow. No skills, experience, or athleticism needed.

PRIVATE TRIPS

Outdoor Programs can organize trips specifically for APU student groups (early honors, clubs, masters programs, etc), staff or faculty, Alumni groups or academic classes. It can be just a couple hours, a whole day, or a multi-day trip.
